We stand with UK’s workers and Unions…

Dagen, weken en zelfs maanden houden Britse arbeiders, geconfronteerd met een galopperende inflatie en lonen die werkgevers hardnekkig weigeren te herwaarderen stakingsacties en stellen ze hun eisen. Dergelijke bewegingen zijn zeldzaam in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de acties van het Trades Union Congress (TUC) en de vakbonden moeten worden toegejuicht.

Na een dans van opeenvolgende premiers heeft Downing street 10, in plaats van een echte sociale dialoog tot stand te brengen en te reageren op de zorgen, ervoor gekozen het stakingsrecht te brutaliseren door een wetsvoorstel in te dienen dat indruist tegen de fundamentele vrijheden en de beginselen van de democratie. Wij willen onze solidariteit betuigen met de Britse werknemers die door werkgevers en regeringen worden aangevallen, aangezien de situatie in het Verenigd Koninkrijk ons niet onbekend is. In Frankrijk, België en elders in Europa vinden sociale acties plaats om de sociale verworvenheden te verdedigen, maar ook om meer middelen te eisen voor openbare diensten (met name gezondheidszorg, onderwijs, justitie, enz.) en loonvoorwaarden om de schok van de inflatie en de energiespeculatie op te vangen en vooral om een eerlijk loon voor werk te krijgen. Het wantrouwen van de Britse regering jegens de vakbonden vindt bovendien weerklank bij populistische en zelfs extremistische politici in de Europese Unie.

Door onze solidariteit met onze vrienden aan de overkant van het Kanaal te hernieuwen, zetten wij ons ook in voor het in stand houden van een echt sociaal Europa.

For days, weeks even for months, workers facing rising inflation, pay increase badly rejected by employers and can no longer cope with the cost of living are gathering at picket lines, claiming and demonstrating across UK. Such movements are not usual in Britain those are rare and here we must pay our respects to the TUC and all Unions for convening the industrial action.

Following the shily-shaly from several Prime Ministers ; instead of responding to people concerns and needs, 10 Downing Street has opted to target labour law with its anti-strike Bill and so regardless international law, fundamental rights and even worse the overriding principle of modern democracy. Beyond expressing our solidarity with British workers struggling with employers and government’s aggressive posture, we shall be aware that the current situation in the UK has a strong echo back to the Continent. As a matter of fact, Belgium, France and most EU members are facing industrial actions either to safeguard social heritage, to claim supplementary fundings for public services ( health, education, justice…) and to absorb shocks due to inflation and speculation on the energies’ markets ; more to finally get a fair pay. Also, the atmosphere of mistrust implemented by the British government against trade unions has found its way to populists even extremists politicians deep inside EU countries.

That is why we must stick side by side with our British comrades as it is our interest on holding our way to a true and fair Europe.
